The Union County Board of County Commissioners is inviting residents to the Annual Columbus Day Flag Raising ceremony. Scheduled for Friday, October 11th, at 11:00 a.m., the event will take place on the steps of the Union County Courthouse at 2 Broad Street in Elizabeth.

Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded, who will serve as the emcee, highlighted the importance of Italian Americans, stating, “We take pride in celebrating the achievements and contributions of Italian Americans, who have enriched all aspects of our lives and continue to shape the fabric of our communities.” She emphasized that the event serves to honor their cultural heritage, hard work, dedication, and legacy in Union County and beyond.

This year’s featured speaker will be Joshua G. Losardo, Mayor of Scotch Plains, a committed advocate for the Italian-American community.

During the ceremony, the Union County Board of County Commissioners will honor several Italian-American organizations in Union County with a formal resolution, recognizing their ongoing contributions.

Commissioner Alexander Mirabella expressed his pride in supporting this tradition, saying, “As a proud Italian-American, I am honored to continue supporting this annual tradition that celebrates our rich heritage and the countless contributions of Italian-Americans to Union County and beyond.” He noted the values of hard work, community, and service integral to the Italian-American culture and praised organizations like UNICO for their commitment to education, philanthropy, and cultural preservation.

After the program, attendees can enjoy Italian-style refreshments and pastries on the courthouse grounds.
