BOSTON – Keith Lockhart is entering his 30th year as the conductor of the Boston Pops, gearing up for this year’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular with a sense of ease that contrasts with his initial years in the role. Reflecting on the summer of 1995, when he first took the podium at just 35 years old, Lockhart recalls being “panic-stricken,” but acknowledges that he has grown more comfortable in the position over the decades.
Despite the changes over the years, Lockhart emphasizes the importance of maintaining tradition. He believes that for celebrations like the Fourth of July concert to resonate, elements from the past must remain intact. “People like to come back, sing the songs they’ve sung before, celebrate some of the same things,” he stated. He also recognizes the concert’s capacity to reflect the current climate of the nation, stating that while it can be a difficult time in history, the event aims to focus on the common ideals America stands for.
Throughout his tenure, Lockhart has experienced countless memorable moments, such as performing alongside the legendary Roberta Flack and Don McLean, bringing their iconic songs to life in front of a vibrant crowd on the Esplanade. When asked about the prospect of inviting any artist to join next year, he expressed a desire to welcome Bruce Springsteen, citing him as a significant figure in rock and roll.
As he prepares for Friday’s milestone performance, Lockhart hopes to inspire new generations of musicians. “Celebrating these things year after year is about nurturing youth and enthusiasm, and I’m thrilled to see the passion coming from the next wave of talent,” he remarked.
Lockhart has conducted over 2,000 performances with the Boston Pops, including prestigious appearances at both the Super Bowl and the World Series. Nonetheless, he maintains that the July 4th concert remains one of his favorites each year, standing as a testament to the enduring spirit of celebration and community.
This year’s performance promises to be an uplifting experience, as Lockhart continues to foster a love for music and tradition while honoring the legacy of past musicians. The event highlights the importance of unity and joy in celebrating national pride.
