ATLANTA — Today marks the 100th birthday of former President Jimmy Carter, as celebrated by The Carter Center and people around the world. As the longest-living president in U.S. history, Carter serves as a symbol of leadership and compassion, inspiring countless individuals globally.
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter has committed his life to service, integrity, and promoting human rights. He grew up as a dedicated member of the Plains community alongside his wife, Rosalynn, whom he wed in 1946. Carter was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1962 and later served as the state’s 76th governor from 1971 to 1975 before becoming the 39th president of the United States in 1977, a position he held for four years. Throughout his presidency, he worked diligently to advance human rights and peace, which was evident in both his foreign policy and domestic initiatives.
In 1982, the Carters established The Carter Center, a nonprofit organization aimed at improving lives through the promotion of democracy, conflict resolution, and the elimination of preventable diseases. Over the years, The Carter Center has evolved into a prominent organization in global health and human rights, positively impacting over 80 countries. With a strong emphasis on election observation and the eradication of neglected tropical diseases, the Center has conducted 125 missions globally and continues to demonstrate how access to health services can contribute to lasting peace.
On September 17, The Carter Center organized a concert at Atlanta’s historic Fox Theatre to honor the music-loving former president. The event, titled “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song,” attracted over 4,000 family members, friends, and supporters of President Carter. Georgia Public Broadcasting will broadcast a recording of the concert at 7 p.m. EDT today, with additional replays throughout October, and it will also be available for on-demand viewing at gpb.org/jimmycarter100.
In honor of President Carter’s centennial, The Carter Center invites supporters from around the world to partake in a digital mosaic project. Nearly 5,000 individuals have already contributed photos and messages, sharing how Carter’s extraordinary life and work have influenced them.
