The Union County Board of County Commissioners is inviting residents to participate in the Annual Columbus Day Flag Raising event. This ceremony is scheduled for Friday, October 11th, at 11:00 a.m., on the steps of the Union County Courthouse, located at 2 Broad Street in Elizabeth.
Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded, who will serve as the emcee for the event, said, “We take pride in celebrating the achievements and contributions of Italian Americans, who have enriched all aspects of our lives and continue to shape the fabric of our communities.” She emphasized the importance of honoring their cultural heritage and recognizing their hard work and legacy in both Union County and the wider nation.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Joshua G. Losardo, Mayor of Scotch Plains, known for his strong advocacy for the Italian-American community.
The Board of County Commissioners will also honor several Italian-American organizations in Union County with a formal resolution during the event, acknowledging their ongoing contributions.
Commissioner Alexander Mirabella expressed pride in celebrating this tradition, highlighting the values of hard work and community service that are integral to Italian-American culture. He noted the dedication of organizations like UNICO in supporting education, philanthropy, and cultural preservation.
Following the ceremony, attendees will be treated to Italian-style refreshments and pastries on the courthouse grounds.
