Latinos around the globe will come together tonight to celebrate Día de Los Muertos, a meaningful holiday dedicated to honoring deceased loved ones. This joyous occasion, observed on the first two days of November, incorporates a variety of cultural traditions, including the creation of intricate altars, known as ofrendas.
This weekend, residents of Orange County can immerse themselves in the festivities through a host of free community events organized by local museums, cities, cemeteries, libraries, and cultural groups. Some highlighted events include:
On Friday, November 1, a celebration will take place at the Yorba Linda Cultural Arts Center featuring children’s crafts, live entertainment, and food trucks from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Cultural Arts Center is located at 4802 Lakeview Ave., Yorba Linda, CA 92886.
Also on Friday, families can visit the Santa Ana Cemetery to pick up Pan de Muertos, a small bouquet of marigolds, and children’s crafts while supplies last, starting at 3:00 p.m. Visitors can also create ofrendas at the graves of their loved ones.
In San Juan Capistrano, the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano is hosting a community altar where visitors can display photographs of their loved ones from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
San Clemente will celebrate Día de Los Muertos with its second annual event at Max Berg Plaza Park featuring altars, art contests, food, and traditional dance performances from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Additional festivities are planned throughout the weekend at venues including Anaheim Cemetery, Fullerton, and Dana Point, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
These various gatherings not only celebrate cultural heritage but also provide a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together in remembrance and reflection. They highlight how culture can foster a strong sense of belonging and unity among diverse groups of people.
