The Union County Board of County Commissioners is inviting residents to participate in the Annual Columbus Day Flag Raising ceremony, scheduled for Friday, October 11th, at 11:00 a.m. The event will take place on the steps of the Union County Courthouse, situated at 2 Broad Street in Elizabeth.
Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded, who will serve as the emcee, expressed pride in recognizing the achievements and contributions of Italian Americans. “They have enriched all aspects of our lives and continue to shape the fabric of our communities,” she stated. “Today, we honor their cultural heritage and recognize their hard work, dedication, and legacy here in Union County and across the nation.”
The event will feature Joshua G. Losardo, Mayor of Scotch Plains, as the keynote speaker. Losardo, a proud Italian American, has been a long-time advocate for the Italian-American community.
Additionally, the Board of County Commissioners will honor several Italian-American organizations within Union County with a formal resolution during the ceremony, acknowledging their ongoing contributions.
Commissioner Alexander Mirabella commented on the significance of the event, saying, “As a proud Italian-American, I am honored to support this annual tradition that celebrates our rich heritage and the countless contributions of Italian Americans to Union County and beyond. The values of hard work, community, and service are deeply rooted in our culture, and it is a privilege to stand with Italian-American organizations like UNICO and others, who embody these principles through their dedication to education, philanthropy, and cultural preservation.”
Following the program, attendees can enjoy Italian-style refreshments and pastries on the courthouse grounds.
