Celebrate Heritage: Join the Annual Columbus Day Flag Raising!

The Union County Board of County Commissioners is inviting residents to attend the Annual Columbus Day Flag Raising Ceremony. The event is scheduled for Friday, October 11th, at 11:00 a.m., taking place on the steps of the Union County Courthouse at 2 Broad Street in Elizabeth.

Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded, who will host the program, expressed pride in celebrating the contributions of Italian Americans. “We honor their cultural heritage and recognize their hard work, dedication, and legacy here in Union County and across the nation,” she stated.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Joshua G. Losardo, the Mayor of Scotch Plains, who is a proud Italian American and a long-time supporter of the Italian-American community.

Additionally, the board will honor several Italian-American organizations within Union County with a formal resolution during the event, acknowledging their ongoing contributions.

Commissioner Alexander Mirabella emphasized the importance of this annual tradition. “As a proud Italian-American, I am honored to support this celebration of our rich heritage and the many contributions of Italian-Americans to Union County and beyond,” he said. He highlighted the values of hard work, community, and service as fundamental to their culture, and praised organizations like UNICO for their commitment to these ideals.

After the ceremony, attendees can enjoy Italian-style refreshments and pastries on the courthouse grounds.
