Alexandria is hosting a week-long celebration in honor of Bastille Day, featuring a delightful array of French-themed activities including gourmet dining, family-friendly events, and an evening 5K race.
Bastille Day, which falls on July 14, marks a significant moment in history as it commemorates the 1789 storming of the Bastille fortress by French revolutionaries, a pivotal event in the fight against royal oppression. While France celebrates with grand parades and fireworks, celebrations in the U.S. often emphasize French cuisine and cultural festivities.
At the forefront of the local festivities is Bastille Brasserie & Bar, located at 606 N. Fayette Street. From July 8 to 13, the restaurant is presenting a special prix fixe menu priced at $59, highlighting traditional flavors from regions such as Provence, Marseille, and Paris. On Bastille Day itself, July 14, the restaurant will offer a prix fixe-only evening service starting at 4 p.m. with an exquisite menu featuring dishes like Escargots Provençales and Magret de Canard aux Fruits d’Été. Reservations can be made via OpenTable or directly through the restaurant.
Josephine, located at 109 S. Saint Asaph St., will also join the festivities from July 11 to 13 with a special family celebration on July 13. The event will include fun activities like face painting and balloon twisting, alongside a selection of delectable menu items and drink specials. The joyous atmosphere is set to welcome families from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free admission.
Adding to the festivities, the Bastille Day 5K will take place on July 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Belle Haven Park, part of the DC Road Runners’ Bunion Derby Series. This evening run, designed to avoid the summer heat, will follow the scenic Mt. Vernon Trail.
