CBS has officially renamed Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming Yellowstone spinoff from Y: Marshals to simply Marshals. This change appears to enhance the title’s clarity, although the specifics behind the adjustment have sparked some discussion.
Initially announced on May 7, 2025, as Y: Marshals, the designation was marked as a “working title,” but it was frequently referenced in press materials without that label. A representative from CBS clarified that the “Y” was always intended to be silent in internal discussions. Despite the title change, the “Y” will still feature in the show’s logo.
In Marshals, Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, embarks on a journey with his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) after selling their Montana ranch. Other notable cast members include Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty, both returning to reprise their roles from Yellowstone. Interestingly, Kelsey Asbille, who portrayed Kayce’s wife, Monica, is absent from the cast list.
The Yellowstone franchise has developed a significant following, branching out into various prequels and spinoffs, including 1883, 1923, and the anticipated series The Madison. Sheridan’s prolific work extends beyond Yellowstone, encompassing projects like Landman, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Mayor of Kingstown, setting the stage for a competitive landscape in television storytelling.
As Sheridan prepares to transition from Paramount to NBCUniversal, some speculate that Paramount may want to distance itself from his flagship creation, especially since the Marshals series may continue even after his departure. However, CBS maintains that the title change was not rooted in any negative sentiment.
Marshals is set to premiere on March 1, airing at 8 p.m. on CBS and available for streaming on Paramount+. As the Yellowstone universe expands, fans remain eager to see how this next chapter unfolds.
