The leadership shift was initiated when Ellison appointed Weiss, known for her controversial opinions, in an effort to attract audiences aligned with Trump-friendly sentiments. Since her appointment, there have been notable resignations and layoffs, with more expected, which has reportedly created tension in the newsroom regarding editorial direction. Anderson Cooper, another prominent correspondent for 60 Minutes, recently announced that he would not renew his contract, citing discomfort with the network’s new direction under Weiss and Ellison.
O’Donnell acknowledged that the turnover in CBS News presidents has increased dramatically in recent years. For the first eight years of her tenure, David Rhodes was the single president, whereas the past seven years have seen five different individuals in the role, including a co-presidency arrangement. This instability has undoubtedly contributed to the prevailing sense of uncertainty within the newsroom.
