The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has taken decisive action by cancelling and suspending the licenses of five drivers involved in reckless driving incidents that occurred in the Central Division. According to LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa, these dangerous actions were caught on video by members of the public last month, showing drivers overtaking other vehicles dangerously on Mead Road in Nabua. This behavior posed a significant risk to the lives of motorists, passengers, and pedestrians.
As a result, three drivers had their licenses cancelled for one year, while the licenses of two others have been suspended for six months. Rokosawa condemned the actions depicted in the footage, referring to them as “extremely irresponsible and completely unacceptable.” He also reiterated the LTA’s commitment to enforcing road safety measures and announced that showcause proceedings would continue against drivers who disregard traffic laws.
In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, the LTA is planning joint enforcement operations aimed at curbing high-risk behaviors. These operations include spot checks, vehicle inspections, speed monitoring, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations. From January 1 to October 23 of this year, the LTA has cancelled 19 driver licenses and suspended 48 due to persistent violations of traffic laws. During the same period, they issued over 4,400 warnings and counseled 95 drivers.
Current statistics reveal that road fatalities in Fiji have reached 62 as of October 29, 2025, a worrying increase from 46 in the previous year. The primary contributors to these fatalities include speeding, improper overtaking, and dangerous driving behaviors.
However, in light of these concerning figures, there remains a glimmer of hope as authorities work tirelessly to combat reckless driving and promote road safety. Initiatives like increased public reporting and community engagement are crucial for fostering a culture of responsible driving. The LTA’s proactive response not only highlights its dedication to safety but also encourages all drivers to take their responsibilities seriously, thereby potentially leading to safer roads for everyone in Fiji.
