Catherine “Cat” Glover, a dancer, choreographer, and singer known for her work alongside Prince during his late-1980s “Sign O’ the Times” and “Lovesexy” tours, has passed away at the age of 60. Her death was announced through a statement on her official Facebook page, though no cause of death was provided.
The post expressed profound sorrow, stating, “It’s with great sadness that we formally announce the passing of Catherine Vernice Glover- AKA ‘Cat.’ Please allow her children, family, and friends privacy at this difficult time. A further statement will be released in due course. ‘Dance with the Angels, we love you.’”
Glover collaborated with Prince for two years, becoming a dynamic presence in his performances. She was known for her dancing, singing, and rapping during Prince’s elaborate concerts, contributing to the iconic 1987 concert film “Sign O’ the Times” and performing the rap in the 1988 hit “Alphabet Street.”
Her vibrant energy also featured in several of his music videos from that era, such as “U Got the Look” and “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” where her memorable interaction with Prince showcased her strong personality.
Upon joining Prince’s ensemble, Glover became part of a group that maintained a significant female presence, alongside Sheila E. on drums and keyboards and Boni Boyer providing soulful vocals. Sadly, Glover’s last Facebook post honored Boyer, who passed away unexpectedly in 1996.
Following the “Lovesexy” album, the musical direction of Prince began to shift, leading to the departure of Glover and her colleagues after the tour concluded in 1989.
Born in Chicago in 1964, Glover began dancing at a young age and was influenced by Prince’s music from an early stage in her life. She gained initial attention on the talent show “Star Search,” where her duo with partner Patrick Allen won multiple competitions but ultimately fell short in the finals. Her breakout opportunity came from joining Prince’s band in late 1986 instead of accepting an invitation from David Bowie to join his “Glass Spider” tour.
During her time with Prince, she was also developing a solo album featuring songs with cat-themed titles, though it has never been released. Her sole solo effort, a 1989 single titled “Catwoman,” was produced by Tim Simenon. Glover continued her career as a dancer and choreographer for many years thereafter.
