Cathay Pacific Elevates Pilot Training with In-House Academy Milestone

Cathay Pacific has reached a significant milestone with the graduation of 34 cadet pilots from its Cadet Pilot Training Programme, marking the first cohort to complete ground theory training entirely at the airline’s own Cathay Academy. This event, held on May 16, 2025, underscores the airline’s commitment to developing aviation talent and supporting Hong Kong’s role as a global aviation hub.

The ceremony, attended by key aviation officials at Cathay City headquarters, signifies a transformative moment for pilot training in the region. By transitioning ground theory instruction from third-party academic institutions to in-house training at Cathay Academy, the airline has enhanced its control over curriculum development, instructional quality, and mentoring processes.

This shift aligns with the strategic objectives of Hong Kong’s Transport and Logistics Bureau, aiming to enhance local capacity-building in aviation. The multi-stage training model now utilized by Cathay Pacific involves initial ground schooling in Hong Kong, followed by primary flight training at certified overseas academies in the United States and Australia, and then advanced simulator training at home. This cohesive model ensures that cadets receive consistent and high-quality education that meets international safety standards.

Cathay Pacific’s training program has been instrumental since its inception in 1988, producing over 1,000 pilots who have advanced within the airline, with many holding significant roles today. Currently, more than 500 cadets are in training, with plans to recruit 130 additional candidates in line with fleet growth forecasts.

The support of government bodies in this initiative highlights the importance of public-private collaboration in enhancing Hong Kong’s aviation education framework. Cathay Pacific’s commitment to upholding international standards in aviation training ensures the development of competent pilots who can meet the industry’s rigorous operational demands.

Looking ahead, the airline aims to further enhance its training capabilities, including expanding facilities and increasing digital learning options, while fostering a diverse pipeline of aspiring aviators. This strategic focus not only strengthens Cathay Pacific’s operational capacity but also bolsters Hong Kong’s position as a reliable center for aviation excellence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Cathay Pacific’s dedication to pilot training is a positive sign for the future of aviation, as it prepares to meet growing demands and inspires the next generation of pilots across Asia. The airline’s focus on integrating in-house training is setting a new standard in the industry, paving the way for continued innovation and educational progress within Hong Kong’s aviation sector.
