Catch the Northern Lights: This Weekend’s Celestial Spectacle Awaits!

Millions of Americans in northern states could experience a stunning display of the northern lights this weekend. Following a significant eruption of solar material from the sun earlier this week, the aurora borealis may become visible if the weather cooperates, according to officials.

The eruption, known as a coronal mass ejection, has prompted the Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado to issue a geomagnetic storm watch for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This watch alerts the public to potential disruptions in navigation, power, and radio systems.

For those wondering about the visibility of the northern lights this evening, the ideal time to view them is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time. They can be observed just after sunset and just before sunrise, but it’s recommended to venture into darkness away from urban light pollution.

The northern lights could be visible as far south as Iowa, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. Under optimal conditions, the lights may even be seen from distances of up to 620 miles.

The center has released a map indicating the aurora forecast for Friday night, showing the predicted intensity of the northern lights across North America and the anticipated southern limit of visibility on the northern horizon.

Additionally, a map has been prepared for Saturday night, providing further insight into the expected aurora conditions.

Earlier this spring, parts of the country enjoyed a stunning display of the northern lights due to a powerful geomagnetic storm. While this weekend’s storm is expected to be strong, it is not anticipated to reach the intensity of the event experienced in May.
