Catch the Majestic Snow Moon This February!

This week, an impressive orange-red full moon, known as the snow moon, will make its appearance in the night sky. As the second full moon of winter, it follows January’s wolf moon and promises to light up the evening for three nights.

The snow moon, which receives its name from the snowy weather typical of February in the U.S., is a nod to ancient methods of tracking the months and seasons. Notably known as the “hunger moon” as well, it reflects the challenges faced by hunters during this time due to adverse weather conditions.

The snow moon will reach its peak illumination at 8:53 a.m. EST on Wednesday, February 12. Full moons traditionally rise opposite the sunset, being highest at midnight and setting in the west at sunrise. This particular moon will also appear quite full on both Tuesday and Thursday nights, making it an excellent opportunity for sky watchers.

Looking ahead, the next full moon will be the worm moon, set to shine brightly at 2:56 a.m. EST on March 14, 2025, in the Northern Hemisphere. This event will be especially noteworthy as it will also coincide with a total lunar eclipse, making the moon appear a striking shade of rusty-red during the eclipse period on the nights of March 13-14.

With the snow moon and the upcoming worm moon coupled with a lunar eclipse, there is plenty of astronomical excitement to look forward to in the coming weeks. This aligns with the natural wonders that inspire both wonder and appreciation for the celestial bodies that govern our nights.

Remember to check the skies for these remarkable lunar events and witness the beauty of nature at its finest.
