It is also referred to as the Frost Moon or Snow Moon due to the onset of winter temperatures during this month. The Anishinaabeg tribal community refers to this time as “Baashkaakodin Giizis,” meaning “Freezing Moon.”
This Beaver Moon marks the fourth supermoon of the year, following previous full moons such as August’s Sturgeon Moon, September’s Harvest Moon, and October’s Hunter’s Moon. A supermoon occurs when the full moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, known as perigee, due to the moon’s elliptical orbit.
Though the moon will officially be full at 4:28 p.m. EST (21:28 UTC) on November 15, it is best viewed during moonrise shortly after sunset on November 16. On this date, the moon will rise approximately 20 to 30 minutes after the sun has set, providing a more picturesque experience. Stargazers will also notice the sparkling Pleiades open star cluster, or “Seven Sisters,” positioned to the lower left of the moon on the evening of November 15, and shifting to the upper right on November 16.
