Cat-Griz Goes Nationwide: Coast-to-Coast Watch Parties Fuel the Rivalry

The Cat-Griz football rivalry, a cherished tradition for fans of the University of Montana and Montana State University, is drawing enthusiasts from coast to coast this weekend, with nearly 100 watch parties taking place nationwide.

Peter Burfening, a lifelong Bobcat supporter who moved to San Diego three decades ago, has been organizing one of the longest-running Cat-Griz watch parties for the last 25 years. “We have been going to the same bar here in San Diego now for 25 years,” Burfening shared, highlighting the strong connections the event fosters among fans. Having attended Montana State University, he expressed a deep-rooted connection to the rivalry, stating, “I believe I was on that campus the first week of my life,” and he has cherished memories of attending games since childhood. The San Diego gathering has seen over 200 attendees in the past, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a live stadium experience, complete with spirited chants that echo the game day excitement.

The enthusiasm for the Cat-Griz game extends all the way to New York City. Matthew Furman, a manager at The Splendid, is hosting their inaugural Cat-Griz watch party and is determined to make it a tradition. “We’re putting our best foot forward to make sure this goes not just smoothly but fun,” he remarked, explaining that they plan to offer a local Montana beer to attendees. This unique touch aims to provide fans living in the big city a taste of home while celebrating the iconic rivalry.

On the islands of O’ahu, Hawaii, Warren Patrick, a Montana State alumnus, has been organizing a watch party that captures the spirit of Aloha. With a turnout ranging from six to over 30 attendees, Patrick emphasizes the camaraderie that brings Montana transplants together, no matter how far from home they may be.

Across all these watch parties, the sentiment remains consistent: fans are excited for the game and the memories it will create. “It’s going to be a good time,” said Furman, encapsulating the shared excitement felt by fans, regardless of their geographical location. These gatherings not only celebrate a long-standing rivalry but also reinforce a sense of community among those who have moved far from their hometowns.
