Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has financed the most extensive basic income study in the United States through his nonprofit organization, OpenResearch. The initiative aims to provide unconditional cash payments to individuals living below the poverty line over a three-year period.
The study involved approximately 3,000 participants aged 21 to 40 from Texas and Illinois, all earning under $30,000 annually. One group received $1,000 a month, while a control group was given just $50.
Results indicated that those receiving the larger monthly payments had the freedom to pursue more desirable job opportunities. The study’s authors noted that “cash can increase people’s agency to make employment decisions that align with their individual circumstances, goals, and values.” Participants reported being more selective in job searches due to their improved financial stability.
One participant expressed the relief of being able to be choosy in the job market, stating, “I don’t have to take a crappy job just because I need income right now.” Another recipient shared their experience of taking a lower-paying position in a desired field, which eventually led to a lucrative six-figure salary within two years, stating, “If I didn’t have the cash transfers, there is no way I could have taken that pay cut.”
While the study showed no significant differences in employment levels between the two groups, the findings revealed that recipients primarily used the larger payments to cover essential expenses such as food, housing, and transportation. Additionally, the funds assisted recipients in addressing health issues, including dental braces and treatment for alcoholism. Although the payments initially reduced stress for participants, many of these health benefits tended to diminish after two years.
Sam Altman advocates for the concept of universal basic income, especially as artificial intelligence continues to reshape the workforce and displace certain jobs.
This study highlights a growing understanding of how financial security can lead to better job satisfaction and life circumstances, ultimately empowering individuals to make choices that align with their personal and career aspirations.
In a world increasingly influenced by AI and economic challenges, initiatives like these suggest a hopeful pathway towards enhancing individual agency and improving quality of life for people in need.
