Cash Boost for Job Seekers: How UBI Transforms Choices

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has financed the largest basic income study in the United States to date through his nonprofit, OpenResearch. This initiative aimed to provide unconditional cash payments to individuals living below the poverty line for a duration of three years.

The study involved around 3,000 participants aged 21 to 40 from Texas and Illinois, all of whom had an annual income of less than $30,000. One-third of the participants received $1,000 per month, while the remaining participants, serving as the control group, received $50.

Results indicated that those who received the larger monthly payments had greater flexibility in seeking jobs that matched their preferences. The authors of the study noted that cash transfers enhanced individuals’ ability to make employment choices that aligned with their personal circumstances, aspirations, and values. Recipients were found to be more active in their job searches, with a tendency to be more selective.

One participant highlighted that the cash transfer allowed them to save money and be choosy about job opportunities, stating, “I don’t have to take a crappy job just because I need income right now. I have the opportunity to hold out and try and find the right fit.” Another recipient mentioned they could afford to accept a lower-paying entry-level job in their desired field, eventually leading to a six-figure salary within two years, crediting the cash transfers for enabling that choice.

The study, however, reported no significant difference in employment levels between the recipients and the control group. The primary use of the payments was for essential needs, such as food, housing, and transportation. Additionally, the funds helped cover health-related expenses, including braces and treatment for alcoholism. Although the payments initially alleviated stress, many health benefits diminished after a two-year period.

Sam Altman advocates for universal basic income as a response to the evolving labor market brought about by advancements in artificial intelligence.
