Carter’s Hope: A Vote for Kamala at 99?

Former President Jimmy Carter, who is the oldest living president, expressed his hope to vote for Kamala Harris in the upcoming November elections, according to his grandson, Jason Carter.

At 99 years old, Carter stated, “I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris,” during a conversation he had with his son Chip earlier this week, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

CNN has reached out to the Carter Center for further comments.

Carter, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on October 1, entered hospice care in February 2023 after experiencing several hospitalizations. In May, Jason Carter mentioned that the 39th president is “coming to an end,” providing an update on his grandfather’s health.

A member of the Democratic Party and a one-term president, Carter is a survivor of both metastatic brain cancer and liver cancer. He underwent brain surgery following a fall in 2019. He is highly regarded for his dedication to human rights and for facilitating the Camp David Accords in 1978, which established peace between Egypt and Israel.

Before his political career, Carter worked as a peanut farmer and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was also the governor of Georgia prior to his presidency.

Carter’s wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, remained by his side until her passing in November, shortly after beginning hospice care herself. She was known for her humanitarian efforts and advocacy for mental health. Together, they founded the Carter Center after his presidency to promote global peace and health initiatives.
