Capture of Escapee Antoine Massey Raises Questions in Orleans Jail Break Saga

Antoine Massey, one of the inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center in May, has been apprehended by U.S. Marshals after a weeks-long manhunt. Sources indicate that Massey, 32, was located in a residence on Stroelitz Street in Hollygrove following a tip from Crimestoppers GNO.

Massey had previously managed to evade capture despite a viral video in which he pleaded for help due to his wrongful accusations. Authorities had conducted a search at a location linked to that video but found only clothing items believed to be his.

With Massey in custody, Derrick Groves remains the only escapee still at large. Groves is considered armed and dangerous, having been convicted for a double homicide in 2018. His family background is notable, as he is the grandson of Kim Groves, a victim of a scandal involving a corrupt New Orleans police officer in the 1990s.

The May jailbreak, which involved inmates breaking through the facility using a toilet and scaling barbed wire fences, has sparked significant criticism regarding the management of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s office and deficiencies in communication among law enforcement agencies. The Attorney General’s office is actively prosecuting others involved in aiding the escape, including Groves’ girlfriend, who faces serious charges.

Authorities have urged the public to provide information that could lead to Groves’ capture. Anyone with knowledge of his location is encouraged to report it to law enforcement agencies.

The successful recapture of Massey serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges that law enforcement faces, but it also demonstrates the effectiveness of community cooperation in addressing crime.
