Captain Cook Cruises Fiji has forged a meaningful partnership with the University of Fiji to enhance academic and industry skills in the maritime sector. This collaboration allowed students and faculty, including Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem, to tour the Fiji One vessel, following the Global Sustainable Tourism Conference 2025 held in Fiji. This initiative seeks to elevate understanding of maritime safety and environmental standards, benefiting the Pacific’s blue economy by integrating cruise and marine tourism sectors.
Students engaged in hands-on discussions, learning about maritime and marine science essentials aligned with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations. Captain Cook Cruises Fiji’s Executive Director, Allison Haworth West, emphasized their offerings as a blend of tourism experience and comprehensive maritime education, covering marine science, sustainability, and eco-tourism. This aligns with World Maritime Day 2025, focusing on coral reefs and marine life, supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life Below Water.
Professor Shaista Shameem stressed the partnership’s importance, noting its role in providing students with valuable exposure and practical knowledge. The University of Fiji is now prioritizing practical experiences within its curriculum to better prepare students for the workforce. Students are encouraged to participate in coral reef restoration and ocean conservation projects, where they can make significant contributions to environmental sustainability.
This partnership aligns with regional efforts, evidenced by initiatives like the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies at Fiji National University, highlighting a commitment to promoting sustainability and innovation in the maritime industry. Such collaborations are essential for cultivating an environmentally aware and skilled workforce, capable of contributing to the Pacific’s expanding blue economy and securing a sustainable future for maritime and tourism industries.
