The Washington Capitals have made a significant move by acquiring defenseman Timothy Liljegren from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. This trade was confirmed on Friday afternoon, with the fourth-round pick originally belonging to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Timothy Liljegren, 26, has had a solid season so far, registering one goal and 11 points across 43 games with the Sharks, while averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game. The 6-foot-1 right-shot defenseman is currently in the final season of a two-year contract worth $6 million, which includes an annual cap hit of $3 million. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Originally drafted 17th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2017, Liljegren has accumulated 21 goals and 93 points in his professional career, split between the Maple Leafs and Sharks. As a native of Kristianstad, Sweden, he also represented his country in the 2023 World Hockey Championship, where Sweden finished in sixth place.

This acquisition signals the Capitals’ commitment to bolstering their defensive lineup as they approach the postseason, adding a player with Liljegren’s experience and skill. The move reflects a strategy of enhancing team depth and performance.
