Cape Henlopen Alum Mason Fluharty Makes World Series Debut with Blue Jays

Mason Fluharty, a former standout baseball player from Cape Henlopen High School, is set to make his mark at the World Series as a reliever for the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays secured their spot after a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on October 20 in Toronto.

Fluharty and the Blue Jays will face the reigning champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Game 1 scheduled for Friday, October 24, in Toronto. This significant achievement marks the first time a player from Cape Henlopen has reached the World Series, a proud moment for both Fluharty and his community.

During this postseason, Fluharty has made an impact in seven games, giving up three earned runs and striking out seven batters. His performance throughout the regular season was commendable as well, with 52.2 innings pitched over 55 games, achieving a 4.44 ERA and 56 strikeouts as a rookie.

Fluharty’s baseball journey began at Cape Henlopen, where he played an integral role in the 2018 state championship team, famously closing out the championship game with a strikeout. He shared that team with notable players including Zack Gelof of the Athletics, Jake Gelof a prospect for the Dodgers, and Luke Johnson who plays for the Washington Nationals. After graduating in 2019, Fluharty honed his skills at Liberty University, where he was a dominating force on the mound, ultimately leading to his selection in the fifth round of the MLB Draft in 2022.

Fluharty’s story is one of dedication and achievement, serving as an inspiration to young athletes from small towns who aspire to follow in his footsteps. As he steps onto the World Series stage, the anticipation surrounding his performance grows, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
