Canelo Alvarez is set to make his 18th appearance as the main event in Las Vegas, defending his WBC, WBO, and WBA super middleweight world titles against Edgar Berlanga on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. The fight card also features Erislandy Lara defending his WBA middleweight title against Danny Garcia, along with a super middleweight clash between Caleb Plant and Trevor McCumby for the vacant WBA interim title.

Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) has captured titles in four different weight classes, including the prestigious lineal championship at both middleweight and super middleweight. He became the undisputed super middleweight champion by defeating Plant via 11th-round TKO in November 2021. Alvarez made four successful title defenses before being stripped of the IBF title in July for opting to face Berlanga instead of the IBF’s mandatory challenger, William Scull.

“I just want to demonstrate that I’m still the best,” Alvarez stated at a Wednesday news conference in Las Vegas. “I have a deep passion for this sport. If that changes, you’ll notice.”

Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) has not yet fought for a world title. He began his career with a remarkable streak of 16 first-round knockout victories but has since recorded just one stoppage in his last six fights.

As a significant underdog (+900 according to ESPN BET), Berlanga recognizes the challenge ahead of him against one of boxing’s elite.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Berlanga said. “It’s going to be an exciting fight this weekend. We’re bringing Puerto Rico vs. Mexico, and I’m ready for battle on Saturday night.”

Alvarez’s latest bout will also be a milestone, marking his 11th fight during the Mexican Independence Day weekend. His only career loss occurred in 2013 against Floyd Mayweather.

The fight statistics reveal a stark contrast in experience, with Alvarez holding a notable edge in both title fight experience and knockouts. This bout not only represents a significant challenge for Berlanga but also a crucial moment in his career as he attempts to claim his first world title.

Berlanga is determined to rise to the occasion, while Alvarez seeks to assert his dominance as the reigning champion. Both fighters are prepared to leave it all in the ring this weekend as they stage a battle deeply rooted in their respective national pride.
