Victoria Mboko, the promising 19-year-old Canadian tennis player, has achieved a remarkable milestone by breaking into the WTA Top 10 for the first time, as announced on Monday. Her rise in the rankings comes after she advanced three spots following her impressive run to the finals at the Doha tournament this past Saturday.
Karolina Muchova, who captured the Doha title, made significant strides as well, moving up eight places to rank 11, closely trailing Mboko by just 188 points.
At the top of the WTA leaderboard, Belarusian Arina Sabalenka maintains a strong lead, holding approximately a 3,000-point advantage over Poland’s Iga Swiatek, who is in second place. The third position is held by Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, following her Australian Open victory, now positioned less than 300 points behind Swiatek after being eliminated in the Doha quarter-finals by Mboko.
In contrast, last year’s Doha champion, American Amanda Anisimova, fell two spots to sixth after her early exit in this year’s tournament, marking a challenging start to her season.
Among the Romanian players in the Top 100, there was a notable decline, with Sorana Cîrstea slipping one place to 32, Jaqueline Cristian dropping three spots to 39, and Gabriela Ruse falling eight places down to 80.
In women’s doubles, Cîrstea remains the only Romanian represented in the Top 100, climbing one position to 54, while Ruse has slipped three spots and currently sits at 103.
The latest WTA single rankings reflect these changes, showcasing a highly competitive landscape as the season progresses. This year could hold great promise for young talents like Mboko, whose recent success highlights the growing emergence of new stars in women’s tennis.
