Donovan Peoples-Jones is not the only veteran free agent participating in this weekend’s rookie minicamp for the New Orleans Saints. Safety Terrell Burgess, a former player of Brandon Staley, is also vying for an extended opportunity alongside third-round draft pick Jonas Sanker, rookie free agent Elliott Davison, CFL standout Eric Cumberbatch, and Travis Martin, a New Orleans native who played college football at Langston University, an HBCU in Oklahoma, and previously tried out with the Seattle Seahawks.
Burgess, who is 26 years old, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft while Staley served as their defensive coordinator. Over his career, which includes participation in 47 games and a Super Bowl LVI victory with the Rams, Burgess has also been with the New York Giants, Washington Commanders, and Buffalo Bills. Unfortunately, he encountered an injury during training camp with the Bills last summer that led to his being placed on injured reserve and subsequently released with an injury settlement, causing him to miss the remainder of the 2024 season.
It’s worth noting that the Saints have previously found success with similar player profiles who impressed during auditions at rookie minicamps, such as safety Roderic Teamer. This could bode well for Burgess, as his experience on special teams may open a path for him to secure a roster spot. Additionally, his familiarity with Staley’s system could provide him with a competitive edge as he showcases his skills during the minicamp. The upcoming sessions will reveal how he fares in his attempt to join the Saints.
Overall, the situation highlights the potential for players like Burgess to redefine their careers with determination and resilience, creating new opportunities within this competitive league.
