Can Rookie Drake Maye Challenge For the Starting QB Spot?

Drake Maye had an impressive performance during the Patriots’ preseason game against the Commanders on Sunday night, raising questions for head coach Jerod Mayo regarding the rookie quarterback’s readiness.

After running for his first preseason touchdown last week, Maye threw his initial touchdown pass of the exhibition season, showcasing his skills despite the team’s 20-10 loss. His performance has led to two key questions: Is Maye prepared to be an NFL starter, and does the Patriots’ coaching staff believe he is ready?

Following the game, Maye expressed confidence about stepping into the starting role for Week 1, stating, “I think I’m ready for whatever this football team asks me. I’m ready to get out there and help us try to beat the Bengals.”

However, the Patriots may hesitate to start him, particularly due to the challenges faced by the offensive line, which struggled with protection and penalties throughout the game. Signs still point toward veteran Jacoby Brissett as the likely starter against the Bengals.

Mayo acknowledged Maye’s performance, referring to him as the team’s “second-best quarterback” after the loss, hinting at potential considerations for the quarterback decision.

Maye’s performance distinctly outshone Brissett’s, as the 21-year-old displayed remarkable composure throughout the preseason. He entered the game after Brissett’s brief stint and immediately guided the Patriots on an 11-play, 88-yard drive that concluded with a touchdown pass to running back Kevin Harris.

Despite some initial setbacks, including a low snap that caused an early loss of yards, Maye showcased his ability to escape pressure, highlighted by a 17-yard scramble on third-and-14 to keep the drive alive. He also connected with fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk for a notable 29-yard completion.

Overall, Maye finished 13-for-20 with 126 passing yards and the touchdown, although he faced considerable challenges due to penalties and erratic offensive line play during his five drives. In total, New England committed four illegal formation calls, two holds, and a false start, alongside two bad snaps sent Maye’s way.

Maye had a near touchdown pass to KJ Osborn, but it was called back due to a penalty. Despite these obstacles, he completed 21 of 34 passes for a total of 192 yards and one touchdown throughout the preseason.

While Maye’s strong performances are encouraging, the Patriots may choose to exercise caution, as rushing him onto the field could hinder his development. Nonetheless, his recent exhibition play presents a promising future for the franchise, should they decide to make the switch at quarterback.
