Can Georgia State Break Its Winless Streak vs. Marshall?

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Georgia State Panthers are seeking a much-needed win this Saturday as they prepare to face the Marshall Thundering Herd at 2 p.m. at Center Parc Credit Union Stadium. Currently sitting at 1-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play, the Panthers are desperate to break a two-month winless streak and secure their first victory against an FBS opponent this season.

Under the guidance of second-year head coach Dell McGee, Georgia State has struggled, only managing to win five of their last 22 games. Their latest defeat came against Coastal Carolina, where they fell 40-27. Meanwhile, Marshall, boasting a 4-5 record and 2-3 in the conference, was defeated at home by the nationally-ranked James Madison.

The Panthers have faced tough competition this season, losing non-conference matchups against prominent programs like Ole Miss, Memphis, and Vanderbilt, with their sole victory coming against FCS team Murray State. McGee emphasized the effort his players have put in despite the challenges: “Our kids have continued to fight and play hard. It’s just the details of momentum or responding in the right manner that has hurt. We still have a young, inexperienced football team that is growing and learning.”

Marshall poses a formidable challenge with their recently improved quarterback, Cameran Brown, who has replaced T.J. Finley since early October. Brown has shown his prowess both as a passer and a runner, accumulating 17 total touchdowns, including 13 through the air with only one interception. His senior receiver Ted Hurst has been particularly impressive, amassing 57 receptions for 854 yards and six touchdowns, drawing recognition from Herd head coach Tony Gibson.

Gibson noted, “Ted Hurst is the best wide receiver in our league — no disrespect to anyone else.” He also pointed to the challenges posed by Georgia State’s offense, highlighting their running back Rashad Amos among a group that showcases depth at the position.

On the defensive side, the Panthers have struggled significantly, allowing over 450 yards per game. Key defensive players include linebacker Josiah Robinson, who has recorded 64 tackles, and safety Jaylen Jones, who has accumulated 44 tackles.

McGee has reiterated the need for better execution from both coaches and players as they prepare for the matchup. “We need to prepare the right way, hold on to the football, stop the run, and then run the football effectively ourselves. The plan and the process doesn’t change,” he said.

As the season progresses, there remains a glimmer of hope for the Panthers to turn their fortunes around, especially with a promising opportunity against Marshall this weekend. Fans are eager to see if this young and resilient team can rise to the occasion and secure their first victory since early September.
