The Portland Trail Blazers are experiencing a setback after a promising start to January, particularly in the 2025-26 season where Deni Avdija has become a standout in their offense. However, with the team’s recent struggles, including a third consecutive loss to the New York Knicks, concerns regarding Avdija’s role have come to the forefront.

Avdija has been nothing short of remarkable this season, averaging an impressive 25.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. His emergence as a top player for Portland, especially after showing potential in the latter part of the previous season, signifies a major step in his career. Nonetheless, his rise as the go-to option for the Blazers might not be the most effective strategy.

While Avdija’s offensive stats place him among elite players—only a handful match his output—his reliance on drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line (averaging 9.5 attempts per game) has raised some questions. His recent performance against the Knicks, where he scored only 11 points on 4-for-14 shooting, highlighted how easily he can be contained by physical defenders. This has led to worries about his ability to maintain impact if not overpowering his adversaries, leaving the team vulnerable during games.

Portland’s offensive strategy, initially expected to be dynamic with the presence of playmakers like Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson, has suffered due to injuries to both players. As Avdija stepped in to lead, the offense became rather predictable, often reducing play to just him or teammate Shaedon Sharpe. Although Sharpe has performed admirably, scoring 26 points against the Knicks, the overall effectiveness of the team’s offense remains a cause for concern.

As the season progresses, the Blazers need to maximize their assets under head coach Tiago Splitter. There are significant gaps in their offensive scheme, particularly in utilizing players like Donovan Clingan effectively in the post and improving off-ball movement. The current lack of fluidity could be remedied with Henderson’s return, but the need to integrate Avdija more dynamically remains paramount.

For the Blazers to regain their early-season form, they must adapt to the evolving scouting reports that focus on Avdija’s playing style. If he can refine his in-between game and three-point shooting while the system evolves to better support him and other players, the team has the potential to bounce back stronger in the season ahead.
