Calvin Russell Delays Syracuse Signing, Keeps 2026 Recruiting Hopes Alive

Calvin Russell Delays Syracuse Signing, Keeps 2026 Recruiting Hopes Alive

Calvin Russell, a four-star wide receiver from Opa Locka (Fla.) Northwestern, surprised many when he committed to Syracuse on July 5. Nearly five months later, however, Russell is reconsidering that decision as he announced at Northwestern’s signing ceremony that he will not be signing with the Orange just yet.

The 6-foot-5.5 pass-catcher expressed his indecision, stating, “With the decision being made, it’s hard. For three to four days, I’ve been thinking and I won’t be signing today.” It remains unclear if he plans to sign during this week’s recruiting period or if he will delay making a final choice.

Ranked as the No. 52 overall prospect and the No. 7 wide receiver in the 2026 recruiting class according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, Russell has attracted interest from several top programs, particularly Miami and Michigan. Syracuse is eager to secure his commitment, especially after signing Russell’s Northwestern teammate, four-star safety Tedarius Hughes.

Reflecting on his initial commitment, Russell highlighted the connection he felt with Syracuse coach Fran Brown. “I made [my decision] a couple of days ago. Michigan came close, but Coach Fran, the individual he is, how he was raised, I feel it,” he stated. “How he carries himself, the men I was raised around are similar to him, that’s why I want to be there.”

Russell currently stands as the highest-ranked commit in Syracuse’s 2026 class, which has seen the school establish a strong recruiting presence in Florida. He is one of six players from the Sunshine State who have committed to the ACC program, illustrating Syracuse’s continued efforts to tap into Florida’s rich talent pool. Despite the current uncertainty regarding his signing, Russell’s talent and potential keep him as a highly sought-after player in this recruiting cycle.
