Jess Allanic has harbored a passion for music from an early age, inspired by her mother’s tales of rock legends while growing up in Guarenas, Venezuela. She fondly recalls her mother sharing stories about iconic bands like Queen, Van Halen, and Guns N’ Roses, which fueled her ambition to pursue a career in music. At just 10 years old, Allanic dedicated herself to learning everything she could about these bands, even delivering a school presentation on Black Sabbath.

However, before making the leap to the UK, Jess moved to France at 16 with her parents’ support, where she lived in a convent next to her school. It was here that she met Alizon Taho, who would later become the bassist of their band, Calva Louise. Despite the language barrier, the pair’s mutual love for music drove them to form a band. Jess humorously recalls learning English by watching shows with subtitles while Alizon practiced a scripted approach during his job at a furniture company.

The duo’s musical journey took a significant turn once they relocated to the UK and teamed up with drummer Ben Parker, who shares their passion for classic rock. This diverse trio formed Calva Louise in 2016, blending influences from Venezuela, France, and New Zealand. Their initial sound, showcased in their debut album “Rhinoceros” (2019), evolved dramatically by their 2023 release “Over The Threshold,” which introduced a heavier, metallic edge.

Their innovative approach is evident not just in their music but in their visuals. Jess taught herself visual effects and video editing, enabling the band to create stunning music videos that have garnered significant attention on platforms like TikTok. Notably, Jess’s dynamic performances feature her seamlessly transitioning between guitar riffs and a unique ‘sliding keyboard,’ showcasing her creative prowess.

In a bold departure from expectations, the latest album “Edge Of The Abyss” includes several songs performed in Spanish, reflecting Jess’s root and a desire for creative freedom. This decision has resonated deeply with fans, with many sharing that they’ve learned Spanish through their music. The band’s sound is a unique fusion of metal, jazz, blues, and Latin influences, inspired in part by Venezuelan folk artist Simón Díaz and Puerto Rican band Calle 13.

Calva Louise’s multicultural background has not only influenced their music but also fueled their desire to tour globally. Having already enjoyed sold-out shows in the UK with bands like Bloodywood and tours across the US with Vukovi, they are looking forward to expanding their reach. Jess encapsulates their vision succinctly: “Music translates to everybody.” With “Edge Of The Abyss” now available through Mascot, Calva Louise is poised to continue making waves in the music scene. Their journey underscores the idea that artistry knows no borders, making their story one of hope and innovation in the global music landscape.
