Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that September 2, 2024, will be recognized as Labor Day in California.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom expressed gratitude for the contributions of working individuals who support the state’s economy and overall prosperity. He emphasized California’s dedication to protecting and empowering its diverse workforce. Recent initiatives include measures to safeguard warehouse workers from unreasonable production demands, address exploitative pay practices in the garment sector, advocate for fast-food workers’ rights in workplace policy discussions, and ensure fair wages for employees with disabilities.
The Governor’s administration is also focused on increasing access to quality jobs and addressing income inequality. A new plan is set to introduce extensive apprenticeship opportunities across California, helping people from various backgrounds gain essential skills and experience for future employment.
Additionally, a Master Plan on Career Education is in the works to prioritize practical learning experiences and strengthen pathways to lucrative careers, especially for roles that do not necessitate a college degree.
California aims to foster an economy that benefits all workers. This Labor Day, and throughout the year, the state remains committed to improving job access, ensuring safe working conditions, and creating avenues for upward mobility for all hardworking Californians and their families.
In formalizing this declaration, Governor Newsom affixed his signature and the Great Seal of California on August 30, 2024.
