Governor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed September 2, 2024, as Labor Day in California.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom acknowledged the contributions of workers who play a crucial role in sustaining the state’s economy and fostering prosperity. He highlighted California’s commitment to supporting its diverse workforce by implementing significant measures to protect workers’ rights. These actions include safeguarding warehouse employees from hazardous production quotas, addressing exploitative wage practices in the garment sector, empowering fast-food employees to participate in establishing workplace standards, and ensuring equitable wages for workers with disabilities.
To combat income disparity and enhance job accessibility, the Governor’s Administration has unveiled a plan aimed at significantly expanding apprenticeship programs throughout California. This initiative will create more opportunities for individuals from various backgrounds to acquire essential skills and experience for future careers.
Additionally, the state is developing a new Master Plan on Career Education, which will emphasize practical learning for students and workers while promoting pathways to high-paying careers, including those that don’t necessitate a college education.
Governor Newsom reaffirmed California’s dedication to an economy that benefits its workers, stating that efforts to enhance job access, secure safe work environments, and provide new avenues for advancement will continue. He expressed a commitment to fulfilling the promise of Labor Day for all hardworking Californians and their families.
The proclamation was finalized with the Governor’s signature and the Great Seal of the State of California on August 30, 2024.
