New wildfires have ignited across California, as thousands of firefighters continue to battle existing blazes in the Los Angeles region that have been active since last week. On Tuesday, emergency crews rushed to tackle a vegetation fire near Pamo Road in Ramona, San Diego County, which threatened at least one structure and quickly spread over approximately 10 acres before firefighters halted its forward movement.
The Auto Fire, which started late Monday night in Ventura, has burned around 56 acres and remains at 0% containment as efforts to control it are ongoing. Fire officials are facing extremely challenging conditions, as a “Particularly Dangerous Situation” Fire Weather Warning has been issued due to dry weather and the resurgence of hazardous Santa Ana winds.
Tragically, the ongoing wildfires have reportedly led to 24 fatalities, with dozens still unaccounted for. Recovery teams are diligently searching through destroyed properties, a grim task acknowledged by authorities who are facing the heart-wrenching reality of finding community members’ remains.
As the Palisades and Eaton fires rage, officials, supported by local and international firefighters, are working tirelessly to control the infernos. The Palisades Fire, now regarded as the most destructive in Los Angeles history, has burned vast areas, damaging 1,280 structures while affecting over 12,250 others. On Tuesday, firefighters were able to make significant advancements against the Eaton Fire, which has engulfed over 14,000 acres, despite ongoing containment challenges.
Bringing additional support to the investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has deployed a National Response Team to aid in determining the fire’s origin. As investigations proceed, authorities are also cracking down on illegal drone use, which has impeded firefighting efforts.
With the Santa Ana winds expected to peak, officials are pre-emptively positioning resources to manage any new fires that may arise. Residents are urged to stay alert to evacuation orders and understand that ongoing conditions are hazardous.
