Seedlings from California have recently arrived in Fiji, marking a significant step in The Wonderful Company’s (TWC) ambitious plan to establish one of the country’s largest commercial fruit orchards. The shipment, which landed in Waiqele, Vanua Levu this month, signifies a major advancement in the company’s agricultural initiatives on the island.
TWC has outlined a pilot project that will primarily focus on the cultivation of Persian limes, Mexican limes, lemons, and papayas, reflecting a substantial long-term investment in Fiji’s agricultural landscape. Earlier this year, the company secured lease agreements for 80 acres of land in Vanua Levu as part of this commercial agriculture endeavor.
Agricultural specialists from TWC conducted thorough assessments across various regions in Fiji last year, determining that Vanua Levu boasts the optimal climate and soil conditions for high-quality citrus fruits, mangoes, and papayas. After two years of detailed planning, the project is now taking form, with over 7,000 seedlings shipped from California being nurtured in a newly constructed greenhouse facility in Waiqele.
Currently, more than 3,500 seedlings have been delivered, with the remainder expected to arrive by the end of December. A greenhouse engineer from China is on site to assist with the construction of modern facilities designed to ensure the seedlings develop healthily in their early stages.
To manage day-to-day operations, TWC has appointed a local farm manager from Vanua Levu, who will work closely with the National Agriculture Pte Ltd (NAPL) team. This manager is pivotal in promoting sustainable farming practices and fostering relationships with local communities and government bodies.
TWC’s extensive experience in global agriculture, particularly with crops such as citrus, almonds, pistachios, and pomegranates, will facilitate partnerships with local farmers, energizing economic growth in Vanua Levu. Additionally, the company has conducted beekeeping workshops for local apiarists in Nadi and Labasa this year, highlighting its commitment to knowledge sharing in areas like bee biology and hive management.
The initiative also includes ongoing training and practical demonstrations to equip local farmers with vital skills and techniques that align with the Fijian government’s goal to strengthen the agricultural sector. The project aims not only to provide immediate economic benefits but also to reduce Fiji’s reliance on imported fruit, minimize trade deficits, and enhance local food security over the long term.
For the residents of Vanua Levu, this initiative promises a dual advantage of short-term economic uplift and a sustainable pathway for future development. TWC anticipates that the project will create market opportunities for local farmers, generate employment for community members, and ultimately increase access to fresh, locally-produced fruits across Fiji.
The Wonderful Company, supported by an impressive $6 billion portfolio and a dedication to global health and happiness, continues its mission to foster impactful agricultural projects that benefit both local economies and consumers. The arrival of these seedlings stands as a hopeful testament to the positive change they aim to bring to Fiji’s agricultural sector.
