Governor Gavin Newsom has taken a significant step in gun control reform by signing three new bills into law late Friday, which will reshape firearm sales and regulations in California.

The first piece of legislation, AB 1127, places a ban on the commercial sale of Glocks and Glock-style pistols beginning January 1st. This law has been designed to specifically target firearms that can be converted into fully automatic weapons using commercially available “pistol converters.”

Another key bill, SB 704, will change the process for purchasing gun barrels. Starting July 1, 2027, any transaction involving the purchase of a barrel will require the item to be shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL), accompanied by a background check through California’s system, alongside any applicable fees.

Furthermore, AB 1078 introduces new restrictions on carrying firearms in “sensitive places,” particularly public transit. This bill also paves the way for an out-of-state carry permit pathway, which will be effective as of January 1, 2026. An additional regulation limits the purchase of firearms to three per month, starting July 1, 2027.

It is expected that these new laws will face legal challenges, with lawsuits likely to be filed in response to the measures implemented. This legislative move reflects California’s ongoing commitment to addressing gun violence and enhancing public safety, marking a notable shift in the state’s approach to firearm regulation.
