Caitlin Clark Shatters Rookie Three-Point Record in Tense Fever Victory

Caitlin Clark set a new WNBA record for the most three-point shots made by a rookie during a thrilling match on Wednesday. The Indiana Fever secured an 84-80 victory over the Connecticut Sun, marking their first win against them this season. Clark reached her monumental achievement by sinking her 86th three-pointer of the season within the first three minutes of the game.

The 19-year-old finished the game with 19 points, contributing significantly to her record with three three-pointers made. Previously, the record was held by Rhyne Howard of Atlanta, who made 85 three-pointers during her rookie season in 2022 and was named Rookie of the Year.

Currently viewed as the frontrunner for the 2024 Rookie of the Year award, Clark also recorded five rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block, despite having seven turnovers. Her shooting stats included 7-for-17 from the field and 3-for-12 from the three-point line.

The Fever’s victory is crucial as they strive for a playoff spot and aim to achieve a .500 record. They have not made it to the postseason since 2016, which coincides with Clark’s freshman year of high school when they were eliminated in the first round.

The matchup began with Connecticut taking an early 8-2 lead, but Indiana responded with a strong 20-7 run to end the first quarter leading 33-26. They maintained their advantage, leading 51-42 at halftime and 69-66 at the close of the third quarter. In a tense moment tied at 80-80 with just over two minutes remaining, Clark drove to the hoop for a basket that put the Fever ahead. After both teams failed to score on their subsequent opportunities, Lexie Hull sealed the win with two successful free throws.

Every starter for the Fever scored in double figures, with Kelsey Mitchell leading the scoring with 23 points. The team had an impressive shooting night from beyond the arc, making 13 of 30 attempts for a 43.3% success rate.

The game was elevated by a star-studded audience, including notable athletes such as Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles and Gabby Thomas.
