Caitlin Clark Makes WNBA History as Indiana Fever Defeats Seattle Storm

INDIANAPOLIS — In a remarkable performance, Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark shattered numerous records, both for her franchise and the league, helping the Fever secure a 92-75 victory over the Seattle Storm on Sunday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This win prevented the Fever from being swept by the Storm this season.

With this victory, the Fever improved to a 13-15 record, marking their second consecutive win against higher-ranked teams. Kelsey Mitchell topped the team’s scoring with 27 points, while Clark added 23 and Lexie Hull established a career-high with 22 points.

Lexie Hull, known primarily for her defensive skills, made a significant impact at the 3-point line, overcoming a previous personal best of three 3-pointers in a game. Hull excelled while defending Jewell Loyd, who had previously scored over 90 points in three games against Indiana. Despite Loyd scoring 23 points in this match, Hull’s defensive play contributed to a -17 plus/minus for Loyd.

Hull’s shooting came alive in this game, hitting two 3-pointers before halftime—her fifth game with multiple 3s in her career. The excitement of the Gainbridge Fieldhouse crowd peaked as Hull continued to sink shots, setting her record with a sixth 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, which pushed the Fever’s lead to 12 points. She concluded the game shooting 6-for-7 from beyond the arc and 8-for-10 overall, helping the Fever to an impressive 15-for-31 from 3-point range, compared to Seattle’s 7-for-20.

Caitlin Clark made history by surpassing a 26-year-old WNBA rookie record for assists. Entering the game with 223 assists, she needed just two to surpass Ticha Penicheiro’s record of 224, established in 1998. Clark achieved this milestone in the second quarter when she made a precise entry pass to Hull, leading to an easy layup.

Penicheiro celebrated Clark’s achievement through a video message on the Indiana Fever’s social media, expressing pride in Clark’s talent, particularly her vision and ability to elevate her teammates’ games.

Currently, Clark boasts an average of 8.3 assists per game this season and is on track to break Alyssa Thomas’s WNBA record of 316 assists set last year. She has 12 games remaining in the season to meet that target, requiring an average of 7.5 assists per game.

In addition to her playmaking, Clark scored 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting against the Storm, alongside recording nine assists and five rebounds.
