The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a series of disciplinary measures against both Senegal and Morocco, following incidents that occurred during the dramatic final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held on January 18, 2026. CAF’s decision comes in response to violations involving the principles of fair play, loyalty, and integrity during and after the match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
As part of the sanctions against Senegal, head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw has been suspended for five official matches due to “unsporting conduct” and for tarnishing the reputation of the sport. Additionally, he has been fined $100,000. Senegalese player Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye will serve a two-match suspension for unsporting behavior directed at the referee, as will his teammate Ismaila Sarr. Furthermore, the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) faces significant fines totaling $615,000, which includes penalties for the misconduct of both fans and players, as well as for receiving warnings by five of its players during the final.
On the other side, Morocco’s national team faces its own sanctions. Defender Achraf Hakimi is suspended for two matches, one of which is deferred for a year, while midfielder Ismaël Saibari faces a three-match suspension and a fine of $100,000 for similar unsporting behavior. The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has been fined $200,000 for the inappropriate actions of ball boys during the game and an additional $100,000 for its players’ improper conduct, which included invading the VAR review area. An additional fine of $15,000 was levied for the use of lasers by supporters during the match.
The final was fraught with tension, culminating in chaotic scenes as Senegal had a goal disallowed for offside and Morocco was awarded a last-minute penalty after a contentious VAR review. Protests led by Senegal’s coach prompted the team to momentarily leave the pitch, but they were convinced to return, ultimately saving the penalty and proceeding into extra time. Pape Gueye then scored the decisive goal for Senegal, clinching the AFCON title amid the turmoil.
The CAF Disciplinary Board also addressed a protest from the FRMF regarding the alleged regulatory violations by the FSF, ultimately rejecting the claims.
