Caddie Comeback: Henrik Stenson Teams Up with Golf Legend at The Open

Henrik Stenson is making headlines once again, this time due to his decision to partner with legendary caddie Fanny Sunesson at The Open Championship in Royal Portrush. Sunesson, who initially retired from full-time caddying in 2012 due to a back injury, has made a remarkable return at age 58, stepping in as Stenson’s caddie when his regular caddie, Marcus Larsson, was unavailable.

Stenson and Sunesson share a long history, having previously teamed up from 2006 to 2011, during which they celebrated victories in several key tournaments, including the Dubai Desert Classic, the WGC-Match Play, and The Players Championship. Sunesson’s impressive career includes an iconic 14-year association with Sir Nick Faldo, helping him secure four major titles—two Open Championships and two Masters. Faldo himself has praised Sunesson for her crucial role in his success, highlighting her as a “key figure” during his historic Masters win in 1990.

Ollie Banks, Co-Team Principal of Stenson’s LIV Golf Majesticks team, expressed excitement about Sunesson’s return, noting her enduring presence in the golfing community and her undeniable expertise. He commented on her love for the game and infectious personality, underscoring the strong bond she shares with Stenson.

Sunesson’s dedication to golf remains evident. She recently participated in a LIV Golf event in Dallas with Stenson, demonstrating her commitment to the sport even after her long career as a caddie. With over 750 tournaments under her belt and experience in six Ryder Cups and one Presidents Cup, Sunesson is a formidable figure in golf, often emphasizing that she just sees herself as a caddie, rather than a female caddie.

Her return is a refreshing sentiment in the sport, showcasing the power of resilience and passion for golf, proving that age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing one’s passions. As Stenson and Sunesson make their way through Royal Portrush, their story serves as an inspiration for persistence and camaraderie in the world of sports.
