BYU Women’s Soccer Earns No. 5 Seed, Hosts Utah State in NCAA Tournament Opener

PROVO — The BYU women’s soccer team showcased confidence and poise as they watched the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday afternoon, having already secured their spot following a strong performance in Texas last week.

Earning a No. 5 seed, the Cougars will host in-state rivals, the Utah State Aggies, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The match is set for Friday night at 6 p.m. MST, and it sets the stage for a rematch from their earlier encounter on September 6, which saw BYU triumph with a 2-0 victory. Historically, BYU boasts a 16-3-1 record against Utah State, although the Aggies have claimed three of the last six matchups under their head coach Manny Martins.

BYU is one of eight teams from the Big 12 to qualify for the tournament, joining notable competitors like second-seeded TCU, third-seeded Kansas, and others. Their successful run this season included a remarkable journey to win the Big 12 tournament, culminating in a title clinched against Kansas. This year marks the 26th time that legendary coach Jennifer Rockwood has guided a team to the NCAA Tournament, reflecting her longstanding impact on the program.

Utah State’s road to the tournament was equally impressive, as they secured their position by defeating Mountain West regular-season champions Boise State via penalty kicks, earning their fifth NCAA berth in history. Graduate senior goalkeeper Taylor Rath played a crucial role, stepping in during crucial moments to help secure their victory.

The Cougars are not solely reliant on statistics, though. They have witnessed the emergence of key players this season, including Ellie Walbruch, who leads the team with 16 goals, and numerous other athletes who earned All-Big 12 honors. The team’s depth, combined with the leadership of senior Mackenzee Vance and junior Avery Frischknecht, has created a strong unit that is fully prepared for the challenges ahead.

Excitement is building within the BYU camp as they look forward to the opportunity to play at home in front of their supporters, especially after overcoming significant roster challenges this season due to injuries and adjustments. Walbruch expressed enthusiasm about returning to South Field, aiming to showcase the team’s talent to their loyal crowd.

In a related highlight, Utah Valley University has also earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament, traveling to face third-seeded Colorado. This marks the Wolverines’ fifth NCAA appearance and their first in three years, further emphasizing the strength and competitiveness of collegiate women’s soccer in the region.

As the NCAA Division I College Cup approaches, scheduled for December 5-8 at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, the hope and determination of both BYU and Utah Valley suggest a promising future for women’s soccer in the state.
