BYU Football Stuns SMU: A Game of Unexpected Turns

DALLAS – BYU football achieved a notable upset by defeating SMU, 18-15, in Dallas, improving their record to 2-0 for the 2024 season.

The performance showcased BYU’s defense, which is showing improvement in its second year under defensive coordinator Jay Hill. Hill, present in the booth, made crucial game calls that allowed BYU to adjust effectively against SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings. SMU struggled in their red zone attempts, managing only two field goals while failing to score a touchdown throughout the game, a surprising halt to their nine-game home winning streak that had seen them average 52 points per game.

With starting running backs injured, backup Enoch Nawahine capitalized on his opportunity after being called into action. After running back LJ Martin was hurt in the first quarter, fellow backup Hinckley Ropati was also sidelined, and Miles Davis had minimal impact early in the game. Nawahine responded well, scoring a crucial touchdown in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Davis contributed a significant 37-yard run that set up a field goal by Will Ferrin, giving BYU the lead late in the game.

Quarterback Jake Retzlaff led the team to victory despite facing challenges, including throwing two interceptions and fumbling in the first quarter. However, he demonstrated resilience by executing key plays, notably a crucial pitch to Miles Davis that resulted in a big gain.

The contributions from transfers who joined under Hill were also notable. Jack Kelly played a pivotal role on defense, including a first-quarter sack and effective pressure on Jennings late in the game. Marque Collins made an important interception that halted an SMU scoring attempt.
