Around 60 Tongan students who are set to begin their studies at Brigham Young University (BYU) are facing challenges in obtaining United States student visas. This situation is attributed to recent US visa restrictions affecting both tourist and student visa categories.

During a press conference in Nuku’alofa, Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua revealed that the inability of these students to secure visas has emerged as a significant concern. He confirmed that about 60 students have been caught in the current restrictions, preventing them from enrolling for the next semester.

The issue was recently brought to the attention of US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who visited Tonga during a Pacific tour. Fakafanua noted that while Landau showed interest in enhancing scholarship opportunities for Tongan students, he also recognized that addressing the visa challenges was a priority.

Tonga has voiced its opinion that the visa restrictions are an exaggerated reaction to a relatively minor issue, specifically referencing that only 13 Tongan students have overstayed their visas in the US. This has led to increased scrutiny from US immigration authorities.

In light of the situation, the Tongan government plans to engage in further diplomatic discussions over the coming months. These efforts aim to rectify the current visa challenges and ensure that Tongan students can access educational opportunities without hindrance in the future.

The ongoing dialogue signals a commitment to fostering educational exchanges and highlights the importance of international cooperation.
