Travelers can anticipate significant improvements at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) with a nearly $500 million redevelopment set to debut on January 9, 2026. This ambitious project aims to modernize the airport’s facilities, streamline passenger movement, and enhance the overall travel experience.
The highlight of the renovations includes a new Terminal A/B connector that will effectively link Concourses A and B, facilitating easier navigation for passengers. Shannetta Griffin, executive director and CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration, emphasized that the new connector will include five relocated gates, additional restroom facilities, and a spacious open area designed to offer a contemporary atmosphere.
One of the most significant changes will be the substantial upgrade to the airport’s baggage handling system. Currently, the old system processes around 2,100 bags per hour, but the new system is expected to increase this capacity to 3,400 bags, with potential future upgrades that could further enhance its capability to handle 5,200 bags per hour. This development encompasses 670 motors operating over a mile and a half of conveyor belts designed to smoothly transport luggage below the passenger walkways, reducing wait times significantly for travelers upon arrival.
In addition to faster baggage handling, the renovation will bring new concessions, including a bar and a Dunkin’ booth, not far from the airport’s food court area. The project represents the largest capital improvement effort in BWI’s history and aims to not only enhance passenger safety and comfort but also provide a more enjoyable environment with updated amenities.
After facing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, construction on this project had resumed in 2022, allowing officials to reaffirm their commitment to delivering a high-tech airport experience. Funding for the upgrade came from airport revenue bonds, federal support, and contributions from the Maryland Transportation Trust Fund.
