Buxton Beachfront Collapse on the Outer Banks: Five Homes Vanish Beneath the Sea

In a recent string of events, Buxton on the Outer Banks witnessed the collapse of five houses due to the powerful effects of Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda. On Tuesday, significant surf activity resulted in the destruction of these structures. This incident adds to a concerning trend, marking the 13th through 17th house collapses over the last five years in the region. Notably, another house had collapsed just two weeks prior.

Alex Littlehales from 13News Now was present at the scene to document the aftermath of the initial house collapse when four additional homes succumbed to the sea. Cape Hatteras National Seashore authorities confirmed that all five houses were unoccupied at the time of the incident, occurring between 2 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The affected properties were situated on Cottage Avenue and Tower Circle Road in Buxton. In response to the situation, the entire beach area from northern Buxton to the off-road vehicle ramp 43 has been closed to ensure public safety. The Seashore has cautioned visitors against approaching the debris, which may pose various hazards.

The 13News Now Weather Team issued alerts for Tuesday and Wednesday, highlighting the threat posed by the large and dangerous waves impacting the Outer Banks. This recent event follows a pattern observed previously in November 2024 in Rodanthe, where several houses similarly collapsed within a short timeframe.

The series of collapses underscores the ongoing vulnerability of coastal structures to extreme weather conditions, raising concerns about the future impact of climate change and rising sea levels on coastal communities. It serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust infrastructure and preparedness in mitigating such risks.
