The Acting Permanent Secretary for Women, Children, and Social Protection has expressed grave concerns regarding student safety after a disturbing video surfaced online, showing an overcrowded bus. Footage captured multiple students perilously perched on the edges of bus windows, highlighting significant risks to their safety during transit.
Selina Kuruleca, the Acting Permanent Secretary, has taken action by filing a formal complaint with the Land Transport Authority (LTA). She firmly stated that no child should have to face danger while commuting to and from school. Kuruleca emphasized that ensuring safe transport is a collective responsibility that involves drivers, bus operators, parents, and the broader community.
In response to the incident, the CEO of the LTA confirmed that the case has been escalated to their enforcement team. A Traffic Infringement Notice has already been issued for violations, including carrying excess passengers and careless driving practices.
The Ministry has reiterated the importance of prioritizing passenger safety, especially when it comes to transporting students. Authorities warned that any form of overloading or unsafe driving practices will not be tolerated. Furthermore, parents are encouraged to discuss safe behaviors with their children while on buses and to report any unsafe conditions they observe.
The Ministry asserts that safeguarding children on the road is a collective duty, calling on the entire community to partake in this crucial responsibility. With increased awareness and vigilance, the hope is to foster a safer environment for all students during their daily commutes.
