Burns Shines Bright Amid Oakmont’s Challenges

The second round of the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club proved to be another challenging day for players, as the average score across the morning wave remained over four strokes above par. However, Sam Burns was the standout performer, shooting a remarkable 65, which propelled him to the clubhouse lead as the day’s play continued.

Burns’ score marks the third-lowest round in U.S. Open history at Oakmont and the fourth-lowest score relative to par in the tournament’s ten editions held at this iconic Pennsylvania venue. Following J.J. Spaun’s impressive bogey-free 66 on Thursday, Burns showcased his exceptional skills, particularly with his irons and putter, gaining 3.08 strokes on approach shots and an additional 2.95 strokes putting.

He began his round strong, registering birdies on the 11th and 13th holes, the latter following a remarkable tee shot that nearly hit the flagstick. As he made the turn, Burns notched further birdies on the 17th and 18th holes, including a difficult 18th hole, one of the most challenging on the course.

Despite facing adversity with a bogey on the first hole, Burns rebounded swiftly with birdies on the second and fourth holes, continuing his solid play. He maintained his composure on the tougher front nine, opting wisely to take a drop after hitting his tee shot into a hazard on the ninth hole. His strategic play allowed him to recover and make an impressive 23-foot putt for par, capping his round with a score of 65.

Burns’ performance has set a significant benchmark for his competition, as he stands one of only two players, alongside Viktor Hovland, to finish the second round under par. With the challenging conditions expected to persist throughout the day, Burns may very well find himself in a commanding position as others contend with the rigors of Oakmont. His strong play serves as a reminder of the brilliance and determination that golf can demand and inspire.
