Fiji's Bulikula Qualify for 2026 Rugby League World Cup

Bulikula clinch Fiji’s spot in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup

Fiji’s women’s rugby league team, the Bulikula, has made history by qualifying for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, a prestigious event set to take place in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Their qualification was secured through a remarkable victory over Nigeria, winning 62-4 in the final of the International Rugby League Women’s World Series in Ontario, Canada.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in the advancement of women’s rugby in Fiji. However, plans for celebrations have yet to be finalized. Fiji National Rugby League chairman Akuila Masi noted that any festivities would need board approval, particularly due to the substantial financial investment of nearly half a million dollars that went into supporting the team’s preparations, including travel and training expenses.

Head coach Josaia Rabele expressed pride in the team’s journey since its inception in 2019, recognizing the incredible progress made in promoting women’s rugby league in Fiji. This victory not only highlights the dedication of the athletes but also emphasizes the ongoing quest for gender equality in sports throughout the region.

The Bulikula’s success transcends mere competition; it represents the aspirations of female athletes in Fiji and serves as an inspiring story for future generations. Rabele conveyed an optimistic outlook, suggesting that increased visibility and recognition could inspire more young girls to pursue sports.

As they gear up for their World Cup debut, Chairman Masi has appealed for potential sponsors and partners to support the team in this momentous endeavor. The anticipation grows as the Bulikula prepares to face rugby powerhouse nations like Australia, New Zealand, and England, ready to showcase their talents on a global stage. The collaborative efforts of the players, coaching staff, and supporters herald a bright future for women’s rugby in Fiji, fostering hope and opportunity for aspiring female athletes.
