EXTRA Bula FC showcased a powerful performance in the opening half, ultimately securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over PNG Hekari FC in Round 3 of the OFC Pro League. From the very beginning, Bula FC demonstrated their intent to dominate the match with impressive sharpness and control.
Their first breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Filipe Baravilala exploited space on the right flank, delivering a pinpoint cross that Fergus Gillion deftly assisted to Thomas Dunn, allowing him to finish from close range. Despite a thorough VAR review for potential offside, the goal was upheld, rewarding Bula’s early dominance.
Building upon this momentum, the team, managed by Stephane Auvray, doubled their advantage in the 35th minute through a well-executed counterattack. After successfully defending a free kick by PNG Hekari, Kaile Auvray quickly transitioned the play, displaying remarkable pace and composure as he outmaneuvered a defender and slotted a precise low shot into the near post, leaving goalkeeper Dave Tomare unable to respond.
While PNG Hekari managed to respond shortly before halftime with a well-timed strike from Ati Kepo, Bula’s strong first-half performance ensured they held a valuable lead as they headed into the break.
The second half saw PNG Hekari increase their possession and mount pressure, but Bula FC’s defense, despite facing injury challenges, remained resolute and effectively closed out the match. Head coach Auvray reflected on the game, stating, “I liked the first 45 minutes. We should have scored one more to make the game easier for us. The second half wasn’t as impressive, so we still have work to do. I’m very happy for the players because they’ve been working hard, but tomorrow we get back to work.”
Auvray also highlighted the club’s commitment to integrating young talent into their long-term strategy, noting the contributions of 18-year-old Ibraheem as a left winger and 20-year-old Ayman, who played left central back. “It was a difficult start for Ayman, but he became more comfortable as the game progressed. I’m happy for them,” he added.
With this victory, Bula FC continues to gain momentum in the league as they strive to enhance their performance and maintain their winning streak. The team is set to face Solomon Kings FC tomorrow in their next match of Round 3 of the OFC Pro League, providing an opportunity to further solidify their position in the competition.
